Built to last Umgeben von wilder und schöner Natur liegt Holmedal, ein kleiner Ort im norwegischen Bezirk Sogn og Fjordane. Hier, zwischen Bergen und Fjord, hat die Natur schon immer reichhaltige Möglichkeiten zur Jagd, Fischerei, zum Beeren- und Pilzsammeln und für allseitige Beschäftigungen an der frischen Luft geboten. Es war wohl nicht gerade die Aussicht auf Outdoor-Erlebnisse, die die beiden arbeitslosen Brüder Steinar und Sigmund Helle im Jahre 1932 dazu bewogen hat, zuhause in der alten Schmiede auf dem Hof in Holmedal mit der Produktion von Messern anzufangen, aber die produzierten Messer erfreuten sich in der örtlichen Umgebung bereits nach kurzer Zeit größter Beliebtheit.
Damit war der Grundstein für ein Stück norwegische Handwerksgeschichte geschaffen. Mit der Zeit war der Markt am Ort gesättigt, und neue Märkte mussten erobert werden. Steinar Helle füllte darum einen Rucksack voll mit Messern und machte sich auf den Weg über das Hochgebirge – mit dem Fahrrad! In der Hauptstadt Norwegens verkaufte er damals die Messer für umgerechnet 5 Cent pro Stück. Da es im Ort keinen Strom gab, musste der Schleifstein in den ersten Jahren mit Muskelkraft betrieben werden. Als aber schließlich Anfang der 1940er Elektrizität zur Verfügung stand, konnte die Produktion nach und nach in größere und zweckdienlichere Betriebsstätten verlegt werden. Dies bedeutete allerdings nicht, dass die Produktion automatisiert wurde.
Damals wie heute bestand ein Großteil der Arbeit aus Handarbeit. Handwerkliche Qualität bedarf qualifizierter Handwerker. Dies ist das Grundprinzip der Firmenphilosophie, der Helle stets treu geblieben ist.
